Welcome to 1GB
This is 1GB's class page. Mrs Gallagher Baker, Mr Fidler, Mrs Cunningham and Mrs Chambers have enjoyed getting to know the children and watching them settle into their new routines this half term. They have all been working really hard and we are all proud of the progress they are making. Enjoy exploring our class page and finding out what we've been covering this half term and for any exciting news. You'll also find links to exciting games, support materials and any photos from the children's work.
What our week looks like:
Each day we have Read Write Inc as our daily phonics session, followed by English and , during the morning. In the afternoon, we focus on our IPC topic, 'Who Am I?' and other curriculum areas.
1GB have their PE sessions on a Wednesday and will also engage in other Physical Active sessions throughout the week, in particular 'Maths of the Day.' Please ensure PE kits are in school every day in case there are any extra opportunities for sports sessions with our external coaches. PE kits must include PE t-shirt (plain white or school logo), plain blue shorts and pumps (labelled). PE kits can be ordered from the school office.
Every child needs have a water bottle in class (labelled), as we know that drinking water regularly helps maintain healthy, active minds. The children can top them up independently throughout the week and they will be sent home at the end of the week.
Water bottles can be obtained from the school office for £1!
It is essential that children read every day (in school and at home). Even 10 minutes a day can have a huge impact and make a significant difference to their reading progress! It is extremely helpful if you can hear your child read every night and sign and comment in their reading journals. Books will be changed daily unless otherwise stated by yourself. If you have any issues with your child's reading, please speak to one of the class teachers.
Alongside daily reading, your child will receive weekly homework on a Friday. The focus of this will be Phonics, Spellings, Maths or English. If your child cannot do the homework, just write a note and it will be looked at in class.
Gwladys wants us to achieve.
Attendance and Punctuality is always important, but in year 1 missing a couple of lessons can be hard to catch up on. Lessons start promptly and activities are ready for the children from 8.50 am to warm up our brains. Please ensure you attend every day and if you have any issues speak to Miss Krogh our Attendance officer. We enjoy celebrating good attendance as a class, so remember, 'Every Second, of Every Day Counts'.
We have been developing our understanding of number, looking at number systems, number formation, place value, estimation and problem solving. The children have had the opportunity to look at different methods and explore different apparatus, enabling them to explore and select different ways to find answers. We have fully enjoyed exploring maths actively through 'Maths of the Day' activities.
Recently, we have been looking at captions and labels to develop our independent writing skills. The children had to design a new playground, create models and advertise their design. We have started looking at traditional tales, focusing on Goldilocks. We have been exploring the characters and setting through drama activities and developing our writing, reading and GPS skills by examining the text. We look forward to the children becoming keen authors and writing their own version of the story! Next half term, we will continue to explore various traditional tales.
1GB's Parent Workshop Thursday 2nd March 2017
We had lots of fun with our parents and carers on Thursday afternoon, when we invited them in to come and try some of our maths activities. We showed them the estimation station we have in class and we made sensible predictions. We solved multiplication problems with practical arrays. We even tried to beat our parents / carers played on the iPad maths games. We really enjoyed sharing our maths skills with our parents / carers and we look forward to the next parent child workshop!
