Mathematics

This page provides information for parents and carers on the National Expectations for children starting Foundation Stage 1 (Nursery) at Gwladys Street in terms of Mathematics (Number and Shape, Space and Measures). These expectations are outlined in the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum.

Children are beginning to:

  • say some numbers in the correct order
  • talk about ‘how many’ – saying who has more/less/the same
  • recognise some numbers
  • talk about shapes and know what shapes are
  • see shapes in the world around them

Miss Nolan and the team will support your child over this year to help prepare them for their learning journey at Gwladys Street.

By the end of the Nursery Year, the National Expectation for Mathematics (Number and Shape, Space and Measures) is as follows:

  • copy a pattern
  • talk about heavy and light objects and containers that are full and empty
  • say when something is more/less and is beginning to add 2 groups of objects together to find the total
