Expressive Arts and Design

This page provides information for parents and carers on the National Expectations for children starting Foundation Stage 1 (Nursery) at Gwladys Street in terms of Expressive Arts and Design. These expectations are outlined in the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum.

Children are beginning to:

  • explore different kinds of ‘making and creating’ eg; painting, sticking, drawing
  • use lines and circles to draw – in particular a picture of themselves
  • join in with dancing, singing and using instruments.

Miss Nolan and the team will support your child over this year to help prepare them for their learning journey at Gwladys Street.

By the end of the Nursery Year, the National Expectation for Expressive Arts and Design is as follows:

Children are beginning to:

  • enjoy singing, exploring different instruments
  • express feelings through dance
  • play with friends and uses their imagination to pretend and make up stories
  • create art work and models that have a purpose
  • thinks about what they are going to draw before they produce it, and can say what it is they have drawn
