Communication and Language

This page provides information for parents and carers on the National Expectations for children starting Foundation Stage 1 (Nursery) at Gwladys Street in terms of Communication and Language. These expectations are outlined in the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum.

Children are beginning to:

  • sit and listen to a story and enjoys joining in with familiar stories and songs
  • follow a simple instruction – eg put your coat on
  • understand simple questions involving words like ‘who’, ‘what’, ‘where’
  • talk about things that have happened
  • speak in simple sentences using at least 3 key words

Miss Nolan and the team will support your child over this year to help prepare them for their learning journey at Gwladys Street.

By the end of the Nursery Year, the National Expectation for Communication and Language is as follows:

Children are beginning to:

  • concentrate and sit quietly during short activities
  • understand what someone is asking them to do, even when there may be more than one instruction
  • use pretend play to be someone else and uses their imagination
  • speak clearly for others to understand and speaks in short sentences
